Beaten Black and Blue Bad choices call for discipline, but spanking won’t do the trick. This method of discipline, also called corporal punishment, is commonly used in the southern states, such as the following: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming (â€Å"The Center†). Discipline is supposed to teach children right from wrong, but spanking only leaves bruises and welts on students’ bottoms and unhappy parents. Spanking should not be allowed in schools because it causes children long term psychological problems and doesn’t help to improve a child’s behavior; instead, methods like isolation, deprivation and reparation allowed by the education code should be used. In 2010, researchers from ACT.org found a remarkable difference between schools for and against corporal punishment. â€Å"Seventy-five percent of spanking states scored below average on the ACT composite, and half had improvement rates that fell short of the national trend. As a group, students in the ten states that paddled the most had the worst test results and showed the least improvement in their scores over the previous eighteen years† (â€Å"Discipline†).
